NAN’s Bioheat/Woodstove Exchange Projects aims to train community members on the safe installation and inspection of wood burning systems using Wood Energy Technology Transfer (WETT) standards. Since 2018 a project team consisting of NAN and Winnipeg Chimney Services worked with 6 First Nation communities to change-out less efficient wood stoves for higher efficiency wood burning systems. The project team will present lessons learned on delivering training locally in the community and supporting the safe and proper installation of new wood burning systems.

Michael McKay is the Infrastructure and Housing Director at Nishnawbe Aski Nation and has been in the field of Infrastructure and Housing since 2000. Michael is originally from Bearskin Lake First Nation which is a Nishnawbe Aski Nation First Nation. He received an advanced diploma for Architectural Technology from Confederation College in Thunder Bay.
Henry Nagtegaal is a WETT instructor, certified to teach all available WETT courses. He serves on the CSA and ULC committees for venting and solid fuel appliances. He has spent his career with the family chimney business and in the early 1990’s conducted seminars on venting, house pressures and code.
While teaching WETT courses in Inuvik, NWT Henry recognized the need for hands-on training together with classroom teaching. He has been involved with this teaching model for several years in both NWT and Northern Ontario.
